Effect of relationships:
Negative
- change in personality to seem “more attractive” to others
- Act out of character
- Anxiety
-The company you keep rubs off on you and you may land up doing things that make you uncomfortable.
Why should I be secure in myself before entering a romantic relationship?
-Some situations it could become dangerous if you have not discovered who you are.
- When you know who you are you become a better, more confident person to be around.
- If you aren’t secure, you might do whatever your boyfriend/girlfriend thinks, likes or dislikes, rather than making your own decisions.
-if you’re secure, you are less likely to behave in ways that you later regret
How do unhealthy/abusive relationships impact you?
- feel the need to prove yourself and do something stupid as a result
- depression/ make you feel worthless
- anxiety or eating disorders
- substance dependence
How do you know if you’re in an abusive relationship?
- are you isolated?
- do people you trust approve?
- do you feel uncomfortable?
- are you supported?
The effects of social media on relationships
- Social media supplement our real / physical relationships.
- All types of media have an impact on our lives, it could be positive or negative.
- Social media can create unhealthy expectations or standards

Healthy boundaries should not restrict someone’s ability to:
Go out with their friends without their partner.
Participate in activities and hobbies they like.
Not have to share passwords to their social media accounts or phones.
Respect each other’s individual likes and needs

Types of relationships
- Friendships - based on your right to those with whom you wish to associate
- Family - based on family roles and identities
- Romance - based on your concept of love, intimacy and commitment
- Work - relationships based on respect, commitment, co-operation and
support - Community - based on mutual interest, support, guidance
Interdependent relationships
People do whatever is best for each other. They make mature and reliable decisions and agreements with each other based on their separate and mutual needs and wants. There is trust and compromise in these relationships.
Independent
People in independent relationships do not rely on support from their friends or family. They may be isolated and lonely, or may prefer this. Adolescents commonly choose to have this kind of relationship with their family whilst they seek the company of friends of their own age.
Dependent
Young children and the elderly are often in
dependent relationships for care and support.
Unemployment and the need for financial support
make dependent relationships necessary.
Unhealthy romantic relationships are often
dependent, where one partner does not, or is not
allowed to function independently.
Whilst adolescents seek emotional
independence, they are usually fully financially
dependent.
How to maintain healthy relationships
- Make personal relationships a high priority.
- Keep personal problems in their place.
- Invest time in your important relationships.
- Resolve problems as soon as possible.
- Show appreciation.
- Be a friend.
