Public participation definition
To be an active part of society
How can i be a public participant?
Vote, stand for elections, pay taxes, protest, petition, hold/attend committee meetings
Why is public participation important?
- Holds leaders accountable (no abusing power)
- Government is informed about publics needs and can react accordingly
Governance definition
The way something (e.g. an organisation) is controlled and managed
Representation definition
The candidates we elect to speak/act on our behalf in parliament
Good governance characteristics:
- keep people informed
- be transparent
- protect environment
- hold themselves accountable
- produce results timeously
- Deliver basic human rights
Rule of law
- A government that is accountable
- Absence of corruption
- Security and order, and fundamental rights:
- An open government that enforces laws and regulations
- Access to justice
Political Structure
- National government
- Provincial government
- Local Government
National government roles
Make & carry out laws/policies for the whole country.
Cabinet, National assembly, National council of Provinces
Provincial government roles
Make and carry out laws/ policies that only affect the province.
Legislature, Provincial Government: Premier & MECs
Local government roles
Make/ carry out by-laws, ensure there is sustainable services, social & economic development, safe & healthy environment and community involvement.
Metros, district councils & local councils
What is the Public Protector?
An independent institution that has the power to investigate and take legal action against the government and its officials should they not be fulfilling their role.
Must always be accessible to all members
of the public.
Civil Society Organisations (CSO’s)
Non-State, not-for-profit, voluntary entities
formed by people in the social sphere that
are separate from the government and the
economic market.
CSOs represent a wide range of interests
and ties.
They can include community-based
organizations as well as non-governmental
organisations (NGOs), interest groups or
faith-based organisations.
