What is APS?

A

Admissions Point Score
This system gives points for the marks you get in NSC certificate. Different tertiary institutions will require you to have different points for different courses

What is the NBT

A

National Benchmark Test
Most universities require it.
AQL (academic and quantitive literacy) test is made up of 2 parts:
- academic literacy (understand vocabulary, pick out main ideas, etc.)
- maths (MAT)

Your results will be combined with your NSC results, and will determine if you should be placed in regular, bridging or foundation programmes at the institution.

Scholarship pros and cons

A

Pro: If awarded, you don’t pay a cent and there are no strings attached
Con: If you fail, you need to pay it back. You have to
maintain good marks. If you are injured you may
have it withdrawn (sport scholarship)

Learnership pros and cons

A

Pro: You get paid a small stipend while you study. You get work experience while you study.
Con: The stipend is small. You are contracted to an “employer” while you study and he/she teaches you what you need to know
