Higher certificate
Provide you with a basic level of higher education knowledge and skills. Enables you to work in a specific industry in a specific job and to go study further in your chosen filed. Usually includes work experience.
Diploma
One step up from certificate
Provides you with extensive and specialist knowledge. Also usually includes work experience. Allows you to enter a number of career paths in a particular field. Enables you to study further for an advanced diploma or bachelors degree.
Degree (bachelor’s)
One step up from diploma
Provides you with a broad education and focuses on theory, research and principles. Enables you to follow a career as a proffessional
What does TVET stand for?
Technical, vocational education and training
Requirements for TVET colleges
Gr 9, but for some courses up to a metric certificate is required

National Senior Certificate (when you pass matric)

All need 40% for English HL and not including LO
Higher certificate - 2 OTHER subjects @ 40%, 3 @ 30%
Diploma - 3 OTHER @ 40%, 2 @ 30%
Bachelors Degree - 4 @ 50%, 2 @ 30%
What is APS?
Admissions Point Score
This system gives points for the marks you get in NSC certificate. Different tertiary institutions will require you to have different points for different courses
What is the NBT
National Benchmark Test
Most universities require it.
AQL (academic and quantitive literacy) test is made up of 2 parts:
- academic literacy (understand vocabulary, pick out main ideas, etc.)
- maths (MAT)
Your results will be combined with your NSC results, and will determine if you should be placed in regular, bridging or foundation programmes at the institution.

Study loan pros and cons
Pro: You have money to help you to study further
Con: You need to pay it back with interest & Someone who can stand surety needs to take it out for you if you are under 21
Bursary pros and cons
Pro: You have money to help you study further
Con: Usually companies expect you to study towards a qualification that is relevant to what they do.
Scholarship pros and cons
Pro: If awarded, you don’t pay a cent and there are no strings attached
Con: If you fail, you need to pay it back. You have to
maintain good marks. If you are injured you may
have it withdrawn (sport scholarship)
Learnership pros and cons
Pro: You get paid a small stipend while you study. You get work experience while you study.
Con: The stipend is small. You are contracted to an “employer” while you study and he/she teaches you what you need to know
