relationship between 2 cycles - rainforest Flashcards
why will rain forming over intact rainforest may fall over deforested land?
due to wind, causing erosion with soil and ash flowing into rivers, increasing carbon content of rivers
how does water leave the rainforest cycle? why?
as an output through streamflow due to reduced interception and increased surface runoff
why is there reduced rainfall in intact forest?
there is less evapotranspiration in deforest areas, causing drought period and the intact rainforest to deteriorate
what reduces water storage?
deforestation on peatlands and the digging of drainage channels
what happens to organic peat matter due to deforestation?
- no longer preserved underwater and decomposes quickly releasing co2 into the atmosphere.
- weathering and erosion increase speeding ip decomposition
- There isa greater wildfire risk from hotter temps
What does Blocking drainage ditches in peatland rainforests help do?
Restore the natural environment by increasing soil water storage and decreasing runoff
What does increasing soil water storage and decreasing runoff do?
raise the water table and decrease flood risk
What is a problem with a managed forest?
less effective at sequestering CO2 than a virgin forest
