Flood Hydrographs Flashcards
what is flood hydrograph used to do?
represent rainfall for the drainage basin of a river and the discharge of the same river on a graph
numerous factors affect whether the flood hydrograph will be:
flashy or subdued
what factors may make it flashy?
short lag time, steep rising and falling limb, higher flood risk ,high peak discharge
what factors may make it subdued?
long lag time, gradually rising and falling limb, lower flood risk, low peak discharge
how does impermeable surface increase surface runoff?
decrease in infiltraton
how does elongated basin create a flashy hydrograph?
precipiation reaches river in a shorter distance
how does larger relief create a flashy hydrograoh?
water flow speed is aided by gravity
pastoral farming - fashy
ground tramples so less interception
deforestation - flashy
less interception
high rainfall intensity - flashy
higher discharge potential
antecedent rainfall - flashy
increased surface runoff as ground is saturated
impermeable underlying geology - flashy
decreased infiltration
high drainage density - flashy
many tributaries to main river
