Reinforced concrete Flashcards
How is reinforced concrete made?
> steel bars are inbedded in concrete at locations exposed to tension
What kinds of bars are good for reinforcing concrete?
> ribbed bars with rusty surfaces=good mechanical bond, but ends must be covered to prevent corrosion
What is pre-stressing?
> puts the reinforced region under COMPRESSION-tensile loads must overcome these internal stresses before concrete experiences tension
allows longer spans with reduced thicknesses, reducing cost
What is pre-tensioning?
> pouring concrete around high yield-point steel tendons anchored in TENSION
after concrete sets, tendons are cut from anchorages, putting the slabs in compression
can also be done ON SITE with POST-TENSIONING
