Rehab Final Flashcards
What are the risks of a patient being obese and what percentage of dogs and cats are obese?
50% of patients are obese
-increased risk of arthritis, urinary tract disease, cardiac disease
-increased risk of some cancers, diabetus mellitus in cats,
-reduced longevity
How do you assess BCS and MCS?
Goal is 5 or 4/9.
-5 is ideal -> ribs are palpable with minimal fat covering. Noticeable waist behind ribs. Slight abdominal tuck. Abdominal fat pad absent
-Muscle condition scoring
=normal, mild loss, moderate loss or severe loss
-they have significant muscle loss if they are overweight
-graded 1-9
-evaluate muscle over the spine, shoulder blades, skull and hips
What does nutraceutical stand for?
Aka supplements
-food or parts of food that provide medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease
How do you design a feeding regime for a patient that needs to lose weight?
10% bw per bcs on 9 point system
-If we want her to be a target of 5 and she is an 8 at 75 lbs, 8-5=3
10% of 75 lbs is 7.5 lbs
3x7.5= 22.5 lbs so substract that from 75
How do we estimate energy needs for weight loss?
DER=RERX1.0
-feed 80-100% of RER for ideal / target body weight
RER = 70(BWx30) +70 kcal
90% of calories come from food and 10% from treats
How do we monitor a patient for weight loss/gain?
Monitor every 2 weeks
for bcs and mcs
-we want them to lose 1-2% per week
-if more than 2% loss add 10-20% food volume
-if less than 1% reduce food volume by 20%
-continue to monitor after ideal bcs is achieved -
What are common ingredients used in joint nutraceuticals?
omega 3 fatty acids
-glucosamine
-chondrotin
-tumeric
How do you evaluate a nutraceutical for efficacy and safety?
Look at peer reviewed published studies
-dont rely solely on testimonials
-Label:
-if animal product then regulated under Fedca, guaranteed analysis, guidelines for use, 3rd party testing
-Manufacturer
-responsive to questions, quality control
What are the different weight loss diets and why are they helpful for obese patients?
Weight loss dry and adult maintenance canine dry
-tells you how much protein, fat, fiber and calories are in per cup
-enhancing msucle mass and satiety
What is a stem cell?
Its an unspecialized cell that is normally present in tissue that can be harvest and multiplied in a lab
-they have regenerative capabilities
-they modulate inflammatory responses
-have a range of applicaitons
What is a totipotent stem cell?
Able to differenetiate into intra and extra embryonic tissue
found in the fertilized zygote
What is a pluripotent stem cell?
-able to differentiate into endoderm, mesoderm or ectoderm
-naturally found in embryos
-can be reverse engineered from adult induced pluripotent stem cell
What is a multipotent stem cell?
-able to differentiate into limited number of cell lines
-found in most adult mammilian tissue
What is PRP?
Platelet rich plasma -> prepared from the patients blood glucose
-alpha granules -> growth factors (anabolic, transforming growth factor beta, platelet derived growth factors)
-cytokines and chemokines
-stmulate cellular proliferation (tissue healing)
What is in PRP?
Platelets, white blood cells, red blood cells
