Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
Responsible for protecting the public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, and medical devices, and by ensuring the safety of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics and products that emit radiation.
Food Code
A model that assists food control jurisdictions at all levels of government by providing them with a scientifically sound technical and legal basis for regulating the retail and food services segment. It is issued by the FDA
Best if Used By Date
Indicates when a product will be of best flavor or quality
Sell-By Date
Tells the store how long to display the product for sale or inventory management purposes
Use-By Date
Last date recommended for the use of product while at its peak quality. It is not a safety indication
60-Day Rule
Requires raw milk cheese–domestic or imported–to be aged at least 60 days at 35 degrees F or above. By that point, cheeses are no longer soft or moist, and are highly unlikely to harbor Listeria
Psychotropic Organisms
Harmful organisms that can grow/survive at or below 35 degrees celcius or at or above 3 degrees celcius
Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act
Set of laws passed by Congress in 1938 giving authority to the US Food and Drug Administration to oversee the safety of food, drugs, and cosmetics
Recalls
An appropriate method for removing or correcting marketed consumer products, their labeling, and/or promotional literature that violate the laws administered by the FDA
Grade A Pasteurized Milk Ordinance
A model of regulation designed to assist states and municipalities in initiating and maintaining effective programs for prevention of milk borne diseases. It also provides administrative and technical details as to satisfactory compliance with the ordinance. It is recognized by public health agencies and the milk industry as a national standard for milk sanitation

The codification of the general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register by the departments and agencies of the Federal Government
