Regulation of Stroke Volume and Heart Rate Flashcards
What neurotransmitter do sympathetic nerves release on adrenergic receptors?
Noradrenaline
What hormone is released by the sympathetic system and where from?
Adrenaline from the adrenal medulla
Where do the noradrenaline and adrenalin act on in the heart?
Beta 1 receptors on the sinoatrial node
What effect does the sympathetic system have on heart rate?
It increases the slope of the pacemaker potential and so increases heart rate
What neurotransmitter do the parasympathetic nerves release?
ACh
Which parasympathetic nerve regulates heart rate?
Vagus nerve
Where does the ACh act on the heart?
Muscarinic receptors on the sinoatrial node
What effect does the parasympathetic system have on the heart rate?
It hyperpolarises the cells and decreases the pacemaker potential which deceases the heart rate
What effects preload?
End diastolic volume
What is afterload?
The load against which the muscle tries to contract
What determines the afterload?
The total peripheral resistance
If TPR increases, what will happen to stroke volume?
It will decrease
How does the sympathetic system affect contractility?
Noradrenaline and adrenaline bind to beta 1 receptors on the myocytes and increase contractility
What effect does the parasympathetic system have on contractility?
Very little effect
What effect does hypercalcaemia do to the stroke volume?
It shifts the curve up and to the left
