Regulation of cardiac output Flashcards
Cardiac output
total volume of blood pumped by the ventricle per minute
At rest cardiac output
5 L / min
During exercise cardiac output
25 L / min
Equation to determine cardiac output
Cardiac output (CO) = Stroke Volume (SV) X Heart rate (HR)
Venous return
Total blood volume returning to the heart by vena cava into the atria
Stroke volume
The blood volume ejected per beat from each ventricle
Ventricular end diastolic volume
total blood volume in each ventricle at end of diastole
Ventricular end systolic volume
Total blood volume in each ventricle at the end of systole
How many bpm does the SAN produce?
around 100
Faster than resting heart rate
Vagal activity
Dominates the SAN to keep the heart rate down to 60/70 bpm
Heart is innervated by:
Sympathetic fibres- noradrenaline
Parasympathetic fibres- acetylcholine
Myocardium innervated by
sympathetic nerve fibres
Starling’s law
Shows the relationship between stroke volume and myocardial stretch
Enables heart to eject additional venous return, increasing stroke volume
