Regions of the body Flashcards
What are the six major body regions?
- Thorax (chest)
- Abdomen
- Pelvis
- Head & Neck (cephalic & cervical)
- Upper limb
- Lower limb
What major bodily regions make up the Trunk?
- Thorax (chest)
- Abdomen
- Pelvis
What major bodily regions make up the Axial region?
- Head & Neck (cephalic & cervical)
- Thorax (chest)
- Abdomen
- Pelvis
What major bodily regions make up the Appendicular region?
- Upper limb
2. Lower limb
What are the four abdominopelvic quadrants?
- Right upper quadrant (RUQ)
- Left upper quadrant (LUQ)
- Right lower quadrant (RLQ)
- Left lower quadrant (LLQ)
What organs are in the Right upper quadrant (RUQ)?
- Liver
- Gall bladder
- Duodenum
- Head of the pancreas
- Right kidney
- Right adrenal gland
- Hepatic flexure of the colon
What organs are in the Left upper quadrant (LUQ)?
- Stomach
- Spleen
- Left lobe of the liver
- Body of the pancreas
- Left kidney
- Left adrenal gland
- Splenic flexure of the colon
- Parts of the transverse & the descending colon
What organs are in the Right lower quadrant (RLQ)?

- Cecum
- Right ovary & fallopian tube
What organs are in the Left lower quadrant (LLQ)?
- Descending colon
- Sigmoid colon
- Left ureter
- Left ovary & fallopian tube
What is the horizontal plane that divides the four abdominopelvic quadrants?
Umbilical plane = transverse plane at the height of the umbilicus (belly button)
What are the nine abdominopelvic regions?
- Right hypochondriac region
- Right lumbar (flank) region
- Right iliac (groin/inguinal) region
- Epigastric region
- Umbilical region
- Hypogastric region
- Left hypochondriac region
- Left lumbar (flank) region
- Left iliac (groin/inguinal) region
What is the top horizontal plane that divides the nine abdominopelvic regions?
Subcostal plane = a transverse plane that lies parallel to the ground that sits at the bottom of the ribs.
What is the bottom horizontal plane that divides the nine abdominopelvic regions?
Intertubercular plane = a transverse plane that lies parallel to the ground that sits across the hips.
What are the two verticle planes that divide the nine abdominopelvic regions?
Mid-clavicular planes = two vertical parasagittal planes that lie perpendicular to the ground, parallel to the midsaggital plane from the mid- clavicle and down.
