What is The Anatomical Position?
A person standing erect, with head, eyes and toes pointed forward and the upper limbs hanging by the sides with the palms facing forward.
What does Anterior (Ventral) mean?
= Nearer to the front (of the body).
What does Posterior (Dorsal) mean?
= Nearer to the back (of the body).
What does Superior (Cranial) mean?
= Nearer to the head.
What does Inferior (Caudal) mean?
= Nearer to the feet.
What does Superficial mean?
= Nearer to the surface.
What does Intermediate mean?
= Between a superficial structure and a deep structure.
What does Deep mean?
= Farther from the surface.
What does Medial mean?
= Nearer to the median plane.
What does Lateral mean?
= Farther from the medial plane.
What does Proximal mean?
= Closer/Nearer to trunk/point of origin/point of attachment.
What does Distal mean?
= Farther from trunk/point of origin/point of attachment.
What does Palmar (Volar) mean?
= Anterior of the hand = Palm
What does Dorsal mean?
= Posterior of the hand = Back of hand = Dorsum
= Superior foot surface = Top of foot = Dorsum

= Inferior foot surface = Sole
