COMESA
International organisation with the goal of upholding human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe.
Council of Europe
Theory that states and their fortunes are inextricably tied together.
Complex interdependence
The use of uniformly sized containers in world trade.
Containerisation
The process by which people around the world participate in the same culture.
Cultural globalisation
Process by which the EU has furthered integration.
Deeper integration
Marxist view that globalisation locks states into permanent need.

EAC

State that is considered to be rising, primarily in economic power and influence.

European Integration
Legal and political structures where power is distributed between two distinct levels of government.
Federalism
An investment by one country or business with an interest in another country.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)
Entity that participates or acts in international relations.
Global Actor
Movement towards political integration of transnational actors aimed at negotiating responses to problems that affect more than one state or region.
Global governance
An informal term for a superpower which seeks or claims the right to intervene in other sovereign states.
Global policeman
The idea that all cultures are becoming the same to a singular world culture.
Global monoculture
Where people in developing countries select aspects of western culture and adapt them to their particular needs.
Glocalisation
Thomas Friedman’s term for the neoliberal policies countries must adopt if they are to experience economic growth and prosperity.
Golden Straightjacket
A type of globalisation in which there is virtually no barrier to the free flows of goods, services, and capital.
Hyper-globalisation
Interaction among states based on sovereign independence.
Intergovernmentalism
Concept that the world system is leaderless: there is no universal sovereign or worldwide government.
International anarchy
South American trading bloc. Has 12 members in South America.
MERCOSUR
International system revolving around three or more poles.
Multipolarity
Companies that operate trans-globally in many countries.
Multi-nationals
Military alliance based around Western Europe and also including the USA and Canada.
NATO
NGO, IGO’s and globally influential individuals or companies or organisations.
Non-state actors
When different sovereign states give up some of their sovereignty to participate in a larger group.
Pooled sovereignty
Describes the nature of the international system at any given time in terms of how power is distributed.
Polarity
The process by which the nation-state no longer is sole decision maker and is impacted by non-state actors.
Political Globalisation
Creation and implementation of institutions that express a particular identity and shape collective action within a geographical region.
Regionalism
The regional intergovernmental organization and geopolitical union of states in South Asia.
SAARC
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is an inter-governmental organization headquartered in Gaborone, Botswana.
SADC
Refers to a large amount of power given to an authority, which, in theory, is placed higher than the state.

Absolute and unlimited power and authority.
Sovereignty
Refers to a large amount of power given to an authority, which, in theory, is placed higher than the state.
Supranationalism
Thinkers who feel Globalisation has limited impact.
Sceptics
Group who accept that globalisation does have an impact, but still feel the nation state has power.
Transformalist
Regional trading bloc which contains the USA, Mexico and Canada.
USMCA
Process by which the EU has attempted to expand membership.
Wider integration
Dominance of free-market in trade that is ‘agreed’ around the world.
Washington Consensus
Organisation that sets the rules for trade between countries globally.
WTO
Global health body.
