Regional development Flashcards
1
Q
Place based approach
A
- Idea is that by tapping into unused potential in intermediate and lagging areas can enhance growth at both regional and national level
- Many urban cores will benefit without policies, due to agglomeration
- belief that all regions can make substantial contributions to economic growth by achieving high levels of productivity in which they are best suited
- Help lagging regions realise their potential (Varga,A.2017)
- An approach that the performance of the whole region is critical
- Suggests that development strategies should focus on building local capabilities and promoting innovative ideas through the interaction of local and general knowledge
- Bottom up approach (Munro,F.2015)
- An example of this is the Woodward corridor initiative, where governmental, non- profit and community partners invest in housing, jobs, schools and businesses to improve regional competitiveness (Hartridge,B.2018) (Detroit)
2
Q
Space blind approach
A
- The measures ar applicable anywhere within particular jurisdictions (Bentley,G.2014)
- Advocates of spatially blind approaches assert that agglomeration and encouraging people mobility improves individual incomes and productivity
- Improving infrastructure to facilitate the mobility of people in pursuit of more opportunities
- Not that easy for people to move
- Waste of resources. Lagging regions have potential
- Brain drain
- Increased inequalities
