Regional development Flashcards

1
Q

Place based approach

A
  • Idea is that by tapping into unused potential in intermediate and lagging areas can enhance growth at both regional and national level
  • Many urban cores will benefit without policies, due to agglomeration
  • belief that all regions can make substantial contributions to economic growth by achieving high levels of productivity in which they are best suited
  • Help lagging regions realise their potential (Varga,A.2017)
  • An approach that the performance of the whole region is critical
  • Suggests that development strategies should focus on building local capabilities and promoting innovative ideas through the interaction of local and general knowledge
  • Bottom up approach (Munro,F.2015)
  • An example of this is the Woodward corridor initiative, where governmental, non- profit and community partners invest in housing, jobs, schools and businesses to improve regional competitiveness (Hartridge,B.2018) (Detroit)
