Regents Vocab-Type 2 Flashcards
AIDS
acquired immune deficiency syndrome, a disease caused by HIV, an infection that results in an ineffective immune system
Allergy
a physical response to an antigen, which can be a common substance that produces little or no response in the general population
Antibodies
a protein that reacts to a specific antigen or that inactivates or destroys toxins
Antigen
A substance that stimulates an immune response
ATP
An organic molecule that acts as the main energy resource for cell processes; composed of a nitrogenous base, a sugar, and three phosphate groups
Bacteria
Extremely small, single-celled organisms that usually have a cell wall and that usually reproduce by cell division
Biochemical
Relating to chemical processes that occurs in an organism
Processes
a series of actions that you take in order to achieve a result
Catalyst
A molecule which can facilitate a chemical reaction without being consumed or changed
Disease
A condition of an organism in which its body or structure is harmed because an organ or part is unable to work as it usually does
Dynamic
the study of bodies in motion and changes in that motion
Equilibrium
the state of balance and stability
Feedback
a response within a system that influences the continued activity or productivity of that system
Mechanism
A system of causally interacting parts and processes that produce one or more effects.
Fungi
Eukaryotic organisms that include microorganisms such as yeasts, moulds and mushrooms
Gas exchange
The transfer of gases between an organism and the external environment in either direction
Glucose
A type of sugar; the chief source of energy for living organisms.
Guard cells
One of the paired cells in the epidermis of a plant that control the opening and closing of a stoma of a leaf
Immune System
recognizes and attacks invading microbes to protect the body against infection and disease
Inuslin
Insulin controls the amount of sugar in the blood by moving it into the cells, where it can be used by the body for energy.
Microbe
A living thing that is too small to be seen with the naked eye
Pancreas
It makes pancreatic juices, which contain enzymes that aid in digestion, and it produces several hormones, including insulin.
Parasite
an organism that lives on or in a host organism and gets its food from or at the expense of its host
Pathogen
A microorganism, another Organism, a virus, or a protein that causes disease; infectious agent
