Refraction, Reflection, Light Basics Flashcards
How we perceive light depends on…
- The nature of light
- How our eyes work
- How our brains process the signal our eyes send them
Specular Reflection:
reflection off a smooth surface
Diffuse Reflection
reflection off a rough surface
Are mirror reflections real or virtual images?
virtual
Do mirrors invert right to left, up to down, or front to back?
front to back
What is “Brilliant Cut” diamond?
when a diamond is cut a certain way that light undergoes a total internal reflection and cannot get out
what is the speed of light in a vacuum?
3 x 10^8 m/s
Does Magnification have units?
no
what is the speed of light in a medium? Define the variables
v = c/n
v= speed
c= speed of light in a vacuum (3 x 10^8 m/s)
n= index of refraction
What is the focal point and how is it measured?
The focal point is the point in which the light rays converge on a side of the lens. it is measured through focal length (f)
What is the lens formula? Define the variables
1/f=1/o +1/i
f=focal length
o=object distance
i=image distance
What is magnification? The formula and variables?
Magnification is how many times bigger/smaller the image is to the object. The formula is m=i/o or m=hi/ho. i is image distance/height. o is object distnace/height.
When the focal length is behind the lens, it is…
negative
What is an object at infinity?
a object at infinity is when the object is placed at a distance far away from the lens all the rays coming towards the lens are parallel.
Do converging lenses flip right to left, top to bottom, and front to back?
they flip right to left and top to bottom, not front to back
