What were Martin luther’s complaints?
Monks were lazy and uneducated, most had no notion of following a religious life and monasteries were often like 5 star hotels
Why did he set up the Protestant church?
So that people could read the bible in English and listen to services in English
What is a heretic?
A person who goes against the teachings of the Catholic Church
What was an indulgence?
A pardon for sin, in exchange for money
What was the inquisition?
It was set up to punish Protestants who refused to change back to Catholicism
What 2 things did the Catholic Church do during the counter reformation?
They improved some rules in the church and sent missionaries to America and Asia
Who were the 2 people that helped Martin Luther set up the reformation?
John Knox and John Calvin
What countries became Protestant during the reformation?
Germany, Denmark, Norway and England
Where did the Catholic Church remain strong?
France, Spain and Italy
What was the reformation?
The change between a Roman Catholic and Protestant religion
What were relics?
“Sacred” things in the Catholic Church eg. Drops of Jesus’ blood
What was the job of Jesuits?
To improve the standard of religious education in the Roman Catholic Church

It was a council that was set up to improve the church by removing some of Martin luthers’ complaints
