Reflection and refraction Flashcards
What happens when a mirror reflects light?
It reflects all light off giving a clear reflection. This is called a specular reflection.
What happen when a rough surface reflects lights?
It will look dull because the light is scattered in all different directions. This is called diffuse reflection.
What is reflection?
Reflection is when a wave bounces (reflects) off of a surface and changes its direction.
What is the line of normal?
It is a line at a right angle.
What is another word for light waves?
Light ray.
What is they ray of light traveling to the mirror called?
The incidence light ray, angle i.
What is the ray of light traveling away from the mirror called?
The reflected light ray, angle r.
What is the law of reflection?
Angle i will always be the same as angle r.
What is refraction?
It is when light bends.
What happens when light goes from a less dense medium to a more dense medium?
The light bents towards the normal.
What happens when light goes from a more dense medium to a less dense medium?
The light bends away from the normal.
Why does this happen?
Because light travels at different speeds in different materials.
What is the rule?
The bigger the difference in density between the materials the more the light bends.
What does transparent mean?
A material that is see-through.
What does opaque mean?
A material that is not see-through.
