Reflection And Refraction Flashcards
How is an ordinary mirror made?
By putting a thin layer of silver on one side of a piece of glass. The silver is protected by putting a layer of paint on the back.
What is a flat mirror called?
A plane mirror.
What is the light travelling in to the mirror known as?
The incident ray
What is the angle between this ray and the normal known as?
The angle of incidence.
What is the ray reflecting off the mirror called?
The reflected ray
What is the angle between the reflected ray and the normal called?
The angle of reflection
What are the properties of an image on a plane mirror?
What is a heliostat?
A device used to measure light.
What is a 2-way mirror?
A light that reflects and let’s you see through it.
What type of mirror is used in a telescope?
Concave mirrors.
What is the law for the angles of reflection and incidence?
The angle of reflection is the same as the angle of incidence.
Why is a periscope used?
To allow someone to see over an obstacle.
What happens to light when it travels from 1 material to another?
It can change its speed and direction. The bending of light when it travels from one material to another is called refraction.
Describe how refraction works.
When light travels from a dense material such as glass or water into a less dense material such as air, it gets faster and bends away from the normal. This also happens vice-versa.
What is the rule to remember in how light travels in different materials?
Faster
Away
Slower
