What is Ecological dynamics?
The CLA is founded on the theory of ecological dynamics, which considers
athletes and sports teams as complex adaptive systems
A network of highly integrated, interacting sub-components
(e.g. parts of the body in an athlete or members of a sports team).
In complex adaptive systems, the multitude of parts continually form
coordinated patterns (synergies), which are shaped by surrounding
informational constraints. Through their interactions, one can
identify the coordination states that emerge in a complex system in nature.
What is Nonlinear Pedagogy in Skill Acquisition?
Non-linear pedagogy is a learner-centered approach to skill acquisition.
Teaching and coaching that uses task and environment design
to develop skill acquisition. That advocates for individualized learning, even in team sports.
Nonlinear pedagogy refers to the pedagogical principles
that underpin the constraint-led approach,
What is Skill acquisition for?
Skill acquisition is seen as the development of a functional relationship
between the performer and their environment.
What are the 7 Principles of Non-Linear Pedagogy?
Constraints
Variability
Skill Learning = forming of information-movement couplings
Simplification
Prescribe a task (“problem”), not the movement (“solution”)
Player learning is largely demonstrated in the “doing”
Patience
What is the constraint-led approach (CLA)?
A constraints-led approach is a method of teaching/coaching based on the
principles of non-linear pedagogy. It advocates a more ‘hands-off approach
to teaching and learning within Physical Education. … These constraints are
the boundaries in which our pupils can search for those solutions.
It is the methodology of manipulating constraints during practice task designs.
What are the three core categories of constraints?
A learner will self-organize
in attempts to generate effective movement solutions
Through the interaction of the three core categories of constraints
task, environment, and individual.
The specific focus is to …..?
Design learning activities that
allow individuals or groups of individuals (i.e. functioning in teams)
to self-organize and co-adapt to changing constraints.
