teach children what it felt like to be a victim of prejudice
told her class that some students were superior to others (more intelligent etc) becaause they had blue eyes - led to discrimination between the pupils
interviews with the children as adults revealed the study had prevented them from acting prejudice against others
how do super ordinate goals reduce prejudice
by working together it is harder to divide into in-groups and out groups
the two previously hostile groups should start to develop a group identity - helps to prevent individuals from making negative comparisons
Aronson et al. - jigsaw technique
mixed race classroom
each child received a part of the whole assignment and was dependant on the other children in the group to perform well in it
observed a reduction in racial tension and an increase in the number of students achieving
how does increased contact reduce prejudice
meeting members of other social groups can reduce prejudice by reducing the effect of stereotypes
what are stereotypes based on and how do they occur
intergroup similarities are perceived or outgroup differences are exaggerated
based on mis information and lack of contact/ experience
Deutsh and Collins (1951) - housing projects
looked at contact between different groups in 2 housing projects
integrated housing and segregated housing for ethnic groups
less prejudice in the integrated housing project - contact does seem to reduce prejudice
