Redox/Electrochemistry Flashcards
Redox Reactions
Reactions involving the transfer of electrons
Oxidation States
Used to keep track of where the electrons are coming from and where they are going. Describes how the electrons are divided up into covalent compounds (which elements will control more electrons)
Fluorine (F)
Always -1
Hydrogen (H)
Always +1 except as hydride
Oxygen (O)
Always -2 except as peroxide
Group IA
Always +1
Group IIA
Always +2
Oxidation # for monatomic ion
Equals it’s charge
Oxidation # for uncombined elements
0
Sum of Oxidation #s for neutral compound
0
Oxidation
Loss of electrons (oxidation state increases)
Reduction
Gain of electrons (oxidation state decreases)
Oxidizing Agent
Allows oxidation to occur, must contain the element that is reduced
Reducing Agent
Allows reduction to occur, must contain the element that is oxidized
