Greenhouse effect Flashcards
Greenhouse effect
Trapping of heat in the atmosphere
What is the greenhouse effect?
Short wavelength sunlight penetrates the atmosphere to warm the Earth’s surface which absorbs some of the energy and reflects back radiation of a longer wavelength. This infrared radiation is absorbed by greenhouse gases, water and CO2, and reradiated back to Earth.
Global warming
The gradual increase in planet wide temperature
Main greenhouse gases
Methane (CH4), water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), dinitrogen monoxide (N20), ozone (O3), and chlorofluorocarbons, (CFCs)
