E2 Flashcards
1
Q
Burning of sulfur and sulfur dioxide
A
S + O2 –> SO2
2SO2 + O2 –> 2SO3
2
Q
Burning of nitrogen and nitrogen oxide
A
N2 + O2 –> 2NO
2NO + O2 –> 2 NO2
3
Q
Burning of sulfur oxides with water
A
SO2 + H2O –> H2SO3
SO3 + H2O –> H2SO4
4
Q
Burning of nitrogen oxides with water
A
NO + H2O –> HNO2
NO2 + H2O –> HNO3
5
Q
Environmental effects of acid rain
A
- Leach Mg2+ from soil, reducing chlorophyll levels, slowing growth of plants
- Increasing concentration of Al3+ from rocks, binding to roots, hindering plants from taking up water
- Causes chemical erosion of stones, like limestone (CaCO3)
- Kills aquatic life. Lakers are dead under 4 pH
- Leach nutrients from soil
6
Q
Ways to counteract acid rain
A
Reduce sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides
Neutralize in lakes with weak bases CaO and Ca(OH)2
