Redox Flashcards
What is an oxidising agent
Takes electrons from another compound
It becomes reduced
What is a reducing agent
Gives electrons to another compound
It becomes oxidised
What is the oxidation state of oxygen?
-2 (unless it’s with fluorine in which case fluorine takes priority or within a peroxide)
What is the oxidation state of fluorine?
Always -1
What is the oxidation state of hydrogen?
+1 (except in metal hydrides where it is -1)
What does the oxidation state equate to?
The overall charge on the ion
What is the oxidation state on a pure element or eg. H2 and O2?
Zero
If the electrons are in the products what does the equation show?
Oxidation
If the electrons are in the reactants what does the equation show?
Reduction
What is the oxidation number on cl?
-1 unless it’s in a compound with O or F
