Acids And Bases Flashcards
What does water dissociation give?
A proton and a hydroxide
H+ and OH-
What are alkalis?
Soluble bases which form hydroxide ions when dissolved in water
What is a strong base? Give an example
Based which fully ionise in aqueous solutions eg. NaOH, KOH
What is a weak base? Give an example
Bases which partially ionise in aqueous solutions eg. NH3
What is a strong acid? Give an example
Acids which fully ionise in an aqueous solution eg. HCl, H2SO4 and HNO3
What is a weak acid? Give an example
Acids which partially ionise in an aqueous solution eg. ethanoic acid
What does an acid reacting with a metal oxide form?
A salt and water
What does an acid reacting with a metal carbonate form?
A salt, water and carbon dioxide (CO2)
How do you carry out a titration?
Use a pipette to add 25cm3 of the unknown solution to a conical flask.
Add a few drops of indicator and place the flask on a white tile.
Fill the burette with dilute acid and flush to get rid of air bubbles.
Slowly add the standard solution to the conical flask while swirling.
Stop when the end point is reached.
Repeat steps until you get concordant results.
What is a weakness of titrations and how can this be combatted?
It is hard to determine exactly when a colour change occurs.
Placing the conical flask on a white tile and constantly swirling helps.
What is the colour in acid, in base and the end point colour for methyl orange?
Acid: red
Base: yellow
End point: orange
What is the colour in acid, in base and the end point colour for phenolphthalein?
Acid: colourless
Base: pink
End point: pale pink
How can you calculate moles using concentration and volume
Mol = Conc(mol dm3) x vol (dm3)
What are concordant results?
Values that are within 0.1cm3 of each other
