Redox Flashcards
OILRIG
Oxidation Is Loss Reduction Is Gain
What is a redox reaction?
Where there is simultaneous oxidation and reduction
What is the role of the oxidising agent?
Electron acceptor
What is the role of the reducing agent?
Electron donor
What is the oxidation number of an element in its standard state?
0
What is the oxidation number of an ion
It is equal to its preferred ionic charge
What is the oxidation number of hydrogen in a compound
+1
What is the oxidation number of oxygen in a compound
-2
What is the oxidation number sum of the atoms in a compound
0
What is the oxidation number of atoms in a polyatomic ion
It sums to the charge of the ion
E,g, SO4 (2-) = -2
What are the 3 exceptions for oxidation number
1) oxygen is not -2 if it is in a compound with Fluorine
2) Oxygen is not -2 if it is in a peroxide compound, it is -1 instead
3) H is not +1 if it is in a metal hydride, it is -1 instead
Oxidation and Reduction of 2Na + Cl2 —> 2NaCl
Oxidation = Na —> Na+ + e-
Reduction = 2e- + Cl2 —> 2Cl-
Steps to balance with an ACID
- Balance for the element that is changing oxidation state
- add water to the side that needs oxygen
- Add H+ to the side that needs hydrogen
- Balance with electrons
