Acids and Bases (no calcs) Flashcards
Define a Brønsted-Lowry acid
Proton donor
Define a Brønsted-Lowry base
Proton acceptor
What physical factors affect the value of Kw?
Temperature
If temperature increases, the equilibrium shifts to the right
This increases Kw and therefore decreases the pH of pure water
Why is pure water still neutral even if the pH isn’t 7?
Concentration of H+ and OH- is equal
Define strong acid
One which fully dissociates in water
What is a weak acid?
Do not fully dissociate in water
Only partially dissociate into their ions
What are some examples of strong acids
Hydrochloric acid
Nitric acid
Phosphoric acid
Examples of strong bases
Sodium hydroxide
Calcium carbonate
Sodium carbonate
Give some examples of weak acids
Ethanoic acid , any organic acid
Example of a weak base
Ammonia
What is a conjugate pair?
Species that differ in formula by H+
