-Purpose of a church
The care in the design shows devotion to God and makes him respected
Statues of saints encourage and inspire to follow their examples
Images inspire Christians to reflect, e.g: stations of the cross
The purpose of a Church is to provide a space for communal prayer and mass. And provide a space for individual prayer
Differences in churches before and after 1965
Before:
Facing east towards Jerusalem
In the shape of a cross
Altar against east wall with priest having his back to congregation
Service in latin
After:
Designed that as many people can see and join in the mass (often a circular shape)
Altar more towards the centre of the church with preist facing congregation

What are the main features of a church
Lectern - Reading stand where bible readings are given, Christ is truly present when the Word of God is proclaimed.
Crucifix - Model/image of cross with Jesus, reminding us of Jesus’s suffering to redeem humans, helping us feel grateful.
Altar - Place of consecration and sacrifice, when taking eucharist, God strengthens faith of believers. The most important altar is the cross where Jesus sacrificed his life.
Tabernacle - Cupboard where consecrated bread is kept, inspiring deep sense of peace as Christ is truly present
What is an alternative altar?

A Table
It where people eat, reminding the congregation that the Mass is a re-enactment of the last supper. It also reminds use that Jesus gave us a share in his sacrifice through the bread and wine.
What is a crucifix without Jesus?
-Its symbolism
-The concern it might remove compared to a crusifix
A Cross
A symbol of Christs victory over sin and death. He is not on it because he has risen, emphasising the resurrection. It also removes the worry of portraying Jesus.
Now a crucifix… without the goddamn cross.

Focuses on christ the risen, glorified saviour. Emphasises Jesus’s resurrection and its importance.

Jesus is victorious over sin and death making life after death now possible
Initially he was not recognised in the perfect condition

Jesus promised to send the holy spirit to do his work and to return at the end of time
This showed he is with the Father

What is redemption specifically?
The act of Jesus freeing us collectively from the slavery of sin, redeeming humanity. This gives us the choice to be saved.
What is salvation specifically?

-When will it be complete

Our individual choice to be saved from sin and going to heaven. We determine this by following Jesus’ teachings.
Salvation will be completed at the end of time when sin and death will be completely destroyed.

It is the voice of God in peoples hearts guiding them to do the right thing.
We instinctively gravitate to the right thing (natural law)but is must be educated to interpret it correctly.
Redemption in Catholic mass

Mass is the source and summit of Christian life that Jesus made possible for us.
Through the Gospel we hear what God wants of us through Jesus’ words and actions.
Communion gives us the strength to go out and follow Jesus’s teachings.
