tensions between US and USSR. Nuclear power. Paranoia of communists in the US. Communists in Greece almost take over without US intervention Eastern European countries become communist. Korean war 1950-53.
why was there a red scare? In the US
Truman gives an order to fire government employees not loyal to the US. HUAC (House on Un-American Activities Committee) investigates Hollywood. 1947-1953 3 million government workers investigated and 3000 fired.
Alger Hiss and the Rosenbergs case
Hiss, a government official found out to be part of a communist group and called for questioning from HUAC. Put on trial for leaking info to USSR. Sentenced for 5 years for lying to court never convicted of spying. Rosenbergs charged with spying for the USSR giving plans of the atomic bomb. They are executed
HUAC
House Un-American Activities Committee. formed in 1938. there to expose communists. Asks those who it believed to belong to subversive organisations to explain themselves. HUAC pressured those individuals of identifying others so that they could question more people. people were targeted by HUAC and the government with little evidence.
Hollywood Ten
10 producers, directors, and screenwriters brought before HUAC but refused to explain themselves. they were ultimately blacklisted in Hollywood because of this

Who was McCarthy
Joseph McCarthy. Republican Senator. Focused on getting rid of communists in the US through ruthless methods
Downfall of McCarthy
court hearing in 1954 against Welch broadcasted to 80million americans. Welch brought up evidence showing McCarthy having forged evidence against some of the army members being communist.
impact of McCarthy
mass paranoia to communism. many innocent people unjustly lost their jobs.
