IV access - leave in canula for 1 hour
common problems in recovery
prolonged recovery -
hypothermia
excessive pre med
too deep
hypoglycemia
choice of inhalant
choice of induction agent
airway obstruction -
debris or gauze - esp dental
bodily fluids
agitated recovery -
inadequate premed or analgesic
BOAS
sedation
analgesia
caution with steroids
leave IV in
leave tube in until sat up
check for regurgitation before taking out tube
maintain in sternal recumbency
tracheostomy may be needed
reintubate is SPO2 consistently low, obvious effort or distress, cyanosis or paradoxical breathing
effects of post operative pain
chronic pain
wound infection
wound breakdown and itnerference
diabetes mellitus (ocassional)
insulin resistance
welfare concerns

monitor using pain scales
