Airway Management Flashcards
reasons for airway management
delivery of oxygen and inhaled anaesthetic gas
scavenging and environmental protection
IPPV
protect airway - reflux, debris
endotracheal tube
cuffed or uncuffed
murphy, macgill or cole
different sizes
red rubber - kinks and cracks, can’t visualise blockages, low volume high oressure so good seal but prone to causing trauma
PVC/silicone - disposible, less prone to kinks, non irritant, high volume low pressure so less trauma, can see inside
armoured - wire in wall, less kinking, hard to place, can’t reduce dead space, can’t use in MRI
cole pattern - pediatric, gas tight seal but dislodges easily if move, good for exotics
supraglottic airway devices
v gels or laryngeal mask
rabbits and cats
can use for IPPV
face masks
lots of dead space
transparent better
care to make good seal
tracheostomy tube
in through neck –> trachea
airway complications
high pressure low volume seals - pressure on tracheal mucosa
pressure necrosis or tracheitis
tracheal rupture
need to detach when moving
inflate carefully
overinsertion
contamination - clean and store well
