Impeachment
a process of bringing formal charges against a public official.
Scalawags
white southerners who supported the union.
Carpetbaggers
whites from the north who travelled south after the war.
Ku Klux Klan
secret society made up of former confederates who terrorized the freedmen in the south.
Sharecropping
system in the south that seems to replace slavery by having a person rent land from a landowner in exchange for a percentage of the value of the crop that person farms.
Ten Percent Plan
Lincoln’s plan that required 10% of a state’s voters to swear loyalty to the U.S.
Freedman’s Bureau
provided emergency relief, education, help finding work, help settling disputes, etc.
Johnson’s Plan
states had to ratify the 13th amendment, amnesty was given to former confederates, and southern states were allowed to elect representatives to U.S. house.
13th Amendment
abolished slavery in the U.S.
14th Amendment
defined citizenship as someone born in the U.S. and established that all citizens are equally protected under laws of the U.S.
15th Amendment
gave voting rights to African American males.
