How does the election of 1876 lead to the end of Reconstruction?
Hayes agrees to end reconstruction in exchange for 20 disputed electoral votes from 3 southern states.
What was the purpose of grandfather clauses?
It was a law that said that if your father or grandfather voted before you, you were able to vote. excuses whites from taking the literary test.
Define segregation.
separation of the races.
What were Jim Crow laws? Provide an example.
Jim Crow laws were laws that all whites and African Americans had to be separated in all public places. an example would be separate schools.
What was decided in the Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson?
It was decided that segregation was legal as long as African Americans had access to public places equal to those of whites. segregation was constitutional.
What was a lynching?
when angry mobs killed people by hanging them.
