What were Radical Republicans?
loose faction of the politicians within the Republican Party

- they strongly opposed slavery before + after the war
- they pushed for uncompensated abolition of slavery
- supported civil rights for freedmen
- advocated reduced rights for ex-confederates
What was the Freedmen’s Bureau Bill?
- enacted March 3, 1865
- aimed to help former enslaved people forge independent lives
- Johnson tried vetoing it, but Congress passed it
