What was happening in psychology in the 1960s?
Fun and games era - group behaviour experiments, cognitive dissonance, almost complete dominance in the USA, ended with the first crisis in psychology (no ethics, Milgram experiment and is psychology a science)
What was happening in psychology in the 1970s?
Rise of social cognition - growth of European psychology and especially social identity theory, pencil and paper experiments
What was happening in psychology in the 1980s?
Rise of applied psychology - psychology starts to have a [purpose and seem more relevant, use of psychology with regards to health (HIV and aids). Theories of the self and self esteem.
What was happening in psychology in the 1990s?
Cultural psychology - growth of social psychology in east Asian countries, evolutionary psychology
What was happening in psychology in the 2000s?
Social neuroscience and embodied cognition (how we do things such as imitation)
What was happening in psychology in the 2010s?
Crisis 2.0 - increasing inequality, political polarisation and crisis in the faith of science of psychology
What is Bem’s theory of social psychology?
It is not embodied and is just cognitive - a more behaviourist view of psychology
What does the representativeness heuristic show?
You rely on how representative of a category something is and base your likelihood of it occurring on this ideal.
What is prospect theory?
When we try to estimate a risky option we weight our potential losses more than our potential gains
What are the 3 conditions of the minimal groups experiment?
- see the system as unjust
- see the system as unstable (there is a possibility of change)
- see the system as impermeable (ie. someone creating change gets a promotion)
How has prejudice changed over the years?
Old fashioned prejudiced look at attitude scale with bold statements and derogatory language whereas modern prejudice looks at attitudes people have towards those trying to make a change in favour of quality - the pace of change
Where does prejudice form in the brain?
Amygdala
Where do we moderate our judgements in the brain?
Prefrontal cortex
What did Bem and Bennetts studies do for modern psychology?
Gave evidence for the contemporary replication crisis and how we cannot exclude false positives without statistical reform. After replicating studies it seemed only 1/3 replicated with social psychology being particularly poor.
