A

Mountjoy feared the press of the Spanish would encourage former rebels in Munster to rise again and he need to stop Tyrone from joining the Spanish so decided to defeat the Spanish at Kinsale as soon as possible

A

Tyrone and O’Donnel eventually arrived in Kinsale with an army of 6500

English in a desperate position: trapped between the Spanish and Irish armies, they lacked proper differences, were cold and exhausted and supplies were running low; disease and desertion also reduced their numbers to 6600

Whilst Tyrone prepared for battle (hoping that the Irishmen in the English army would desert and join him instead), Mountjoy launched a surprise attack on the Irish (over quickly)

A

Some were experienced but the majority were untrained and undisciplined new recruits

Ireland was seen as frightening/dangerous so there was reluctance to fight
