  1. The NAACP ( National association of advancement of coloured people) membership increased from 50,000 to 45,000 during WW2
  2. Over a million black people served in the armed forces in WW2 giving black soldiers a glimpse of life in forge in lands which were not discriminatory

Formation of effective black organisations

  1. NAACP which focused on legally challenging the barriers to black peoples equality the group majorly targeted the Supreme Court focussing on the fight against segregated education
  2. Southern Christian leadership conference ( SCLC) and they held a march outside the Lincoln memorial in 1957 which was easy to organise and many people joined to fight for black peoples civil rights the group also stuck to non violent tactics
    A - loads of publicity
    A+ - could easily be ignored by gov ( non violent)
    Ev -gov aiding demobilised soldiers a college education ensuring black poeple were educated on civil rights

  1. A Phillip Randolph was the first black leader to see and use the potential of black workers within a trade union context also increasing black confidence and civil rights militancy
  2. MLK who was deceived as an affective spin doctor who manipulated the media to great effect and chose his opponents carefully
    A - brought attention to campaign and he was very influential
    A + - his publicity in the north was limited he was strongly focussed in south
    Ev - president Truman states how his stomach “ turned over when I learned that negro soldiers, just back from overseas were being dumped out of army trucks in Missouri and beaten”
