  1. In 1919, 4 million worker went on strike (1/5th of the labour force) many believed that strikes were initiated by communist who wanted a Russian style, belchieviek reveloution
  2. Red scared which increased suspicion on immigrants then the Russian reveloution in 1917 which had established the first communist state which was committed to spreading reveloution and destroyed capitalism, many immigrants came from Russia and Eastern Europe

  1. Many separate ethnic neighbourhoods developed in cites such as Italians in Brooklyn, Irish dominated Boston and Czechs and poles flocked to Chicago
  2. There were fears that these immigrants would increase the already high crime rates this was heightened by the existence of organised crime gangs such as the mafia with Italian roots

  1. Many immigrants accepted poor working conditions, lowered wages and where seen as strike breakers
    A - huge resentment from working class losing jobs
    A + usall manual jobs Americans felt where beneath them
    Ev - much of this resentment and economic blame was due to how Americans felt about immigrants being uneducated, their race and looks Highman argued “ By Western European standards the masses of southern and Eastern Europe were educationally deficient, socially backwards and bizarre in appearance”
