Reasons for forgetting Flashcards
what is meant by interference ?
when one memory disturbs the ability to recall another and is more likely to happen when memories are similar
when does interference occur ?
when 2 pieces of similar info conflict with eachother
what are the 2 types of interference ?
proactive interference
retroactive interference
what happens in proactive interference ?
when old info interferes with an attempt to recall / store something new
old blocks new
what happens in retroactive interference ?
when coding new info disrupts info stored previously
new blocks old
Schmidt (2000) procedure ?
700 names randomly selected from a database of 1700 former students of a dutch elementary schooland were sent a questionnare. 211 responded from age 11-79
They were given a map of the neighbourhood where they had gone to school with all 48 street names replaced with numbers . They were asked to recall as many as possible. Other personal info was collected by questionnaire like how many times they moved house and how often they went back to the neighbourhood
How was the amount of interference assessed by ?
The number of times they moved to other neighbourhood’s/ cities
Measurement was very variable where 25% had never moved and others moved 40 times
Schmidt (2000) findings ?
Positive correlation between number of times participants had moved house outside the molenburg neighbourhood and number of streets forgotten
So proved retroactive interference as the new blocked the old
