Improving the accuracy of ewt: cognitive interview Flashcards
What is the aim of the cognitive interview technique ?
To improve recall of eye witnesses
Which 2 assumptions does the cognitive interview rest on ?
- memory of an event is made up of an interconnected network and therefore there should be several ways of getting to the same point
- memory retrieval will be more effective if at the time of retrieval the context surrounding the original event can be re-instated
So this is why they use …?
- they use a different timeline and different POV’s
- they tell them to describe the setting and go back to the event
Fisher and Geiselman (1992)
Reviewed memory literature
- people remember things better if they are provided with retrieval cues
What were the 3 components that fisher and geiselman developed ?
- Report everything
- reinstate the context
- Reverse the order
Report everything
Report every detail you can even if it seems irrelevant or trivial
Reinstate the context
Recall the scene, the weather, what you wrre thinking , feeling- related to context dependant forgetting
Reverse the order
Describe the event in reverse order, prevent people reporting thier expectations
Change perspective
Describe the event as itvwould have been seen from a different perspective/ viewpoint. This should prevent the effect of scgemas and recall
What did Geieleman found about the CI procedure ?
Geiselman found that the CI procedure produced more accurate detailed memories than the SPI techmique and interviews conducted under hypnosis, suggesting the technique is relatively effective
What did Geiselman and fisher find ?
They found that the CI works best when used within a short time following a crime rather than a long time afterwards, suggesting recall is enhanced best when CI’s are conducted immediately after the event
What did Kohnken find ?
He found that when he compared the CI with the standard police interview he fou d that the CI produced more accurate detail and more detail in general but also inaccurate detail
