Reagents used in reactions Flashcards

1
Q

What does FeCl3 do as a reagent? What is it similar to?

A

acts as a Lewis acid. Cl3 pulls electron density away from the Fe, making Fe partially positive and therefore can accept electrons.
Similar to metals with halogens - AlBr3, FeBr3, AlCl3

Q

What does LiAlH4 do? Give examples f where this reagent would be used. Can LiAlH4 be controlled?

A

It is a reducing agent (adds more hydrogen to the final product). Li is a spectator ion so AlH4 -
Can be used in reducing aldehydes to primary alcohols with the presence of acid to protonate the product to form alcohol.
LiAlH4 cannot be controlled so reduction of moleculeswll continue
LiAlH4 also used for reduction of amides and nitriles and esters

Q

What is TsCl used for ?

A

Used for making an alcohol a good leaving group by forming a tosylate. The OH attacks the TsCl group

Q

How are alkooxides formed?

A

Base reacting with an alcohol group - the base (-) removes the proton from th alcohol group forming an alkoxide
