Reactions with organometallics Flashcards
1
Q
how are OMC’s made?
A
reaction between a metal (magnesium/Lithium) with a halide (CH3-I)
2
Q
what is important about these organo metallic compounds?
A
Unlike other common molecules, the neutral molecule has a partial negative charge on the carbon and thus the partial positive is instead present on the metal. This allows the molecule to act as a strong nucleophile
3
Q
what reagent is used in reactions with OMC’s?
A
polar aprotic solvents - common solvent used is ether. This prevents the metals reacting with the hydrogen atoms and thus allows the rxn to proceed.
