Reagents Flashcards
1
Q
Reagent
A
- any substance used to produce or provide chemical reaction
- comes in many grades depending on the testing being done
2
Q
Reagent Grade / Analytical Reagent Grade (AR)
A
- highest degree of purity
- will list level of impurities on label
- used for research, producing controls, standards or buffers
- ACS (American Chemical Society) my be found in addition / in place of AR
- gold standard
3
Q
Chemically Pure (CP)
A
- usual purity for lab analyses (not used for research)
- does not show level of impurities on label
- silver standard
4
Q
United States Pharmacopia (USP) or National Formulary (NF)
A
- less pure than CP grade
- used in pharmacies
- bronze standard
5
Q
Technical Grade
A
- least pure
- used for industrial purposes
- farm grade
6
Q
Purified, Practical or Commercial Grade
A
- not used in labs
- used by manufactures as starting chemical to produce reagent of greater purity
- diesel standard
7
Q
Storage of Acids and Bases
A
- in glass bottle on drip trays, separately, in explosives cabinets and carry using rubber splash/ fracture bucket
- if diluting acids, always add acids to water, not water to acids explosive
8
Q
Storage of Flammables
A
- store in thin a fireproof cabinet/ flammables cabinet
9
Q
Labelling
A
- Always label container with Nate of reagent, concentration, preparation date, initials of person who prepared as min info
- include WHMIS if needed
