Class 1
A
- open fronted, air brought in from room through and passed through HEPA filter
- may be vented internally or externally
- at least 1 HEPA filter
- used in high schools, and pharmacies

Class 2
A
- partially contained cabinet with a glass sash leaving 8-10 inches open for working
- min 2 HEPA filets
- may be vented outside or back into room
- high degree of protections
- used in non- research medical labs

Class 3
A
- completely sealed and exhausted to outside after HEPA filtration
- air from outside is filled before brought in thru HEPA
- always exhaust bac outside
- used for airborne contaminants , TB, Ebola, anthrax, research
- at least 2 HEPA filters, usually 3

Fume Hood
A
- used for chemical storage and work to draw irritating or toxic chemicals up and away from operator
- no HEPA filters- no biological protection
- used for parasite and histology processing, reagent preparations, or is solvent is toxic or flammable

Cleaning Safety Cabinets
A
- done using alcohol (bleach will cause corrosion)
- can use gluteraldehyde - inhalation irritant * must have cabinet running which defeats the purpose if vented back to room*
- if vented to room must use 70% isopropyl alcohol - HEPA filters checked annually
- have have UV light installed for sterilization
