What process do I want to take in addressing Reading Comprehension Passages / Questions?
What do I want to ensure I remember when addressing a reading comprehension passage?
How much time should I take on Reading a RC passage and answer each question?
- We should be taking 2-3 minutes to read the passage
- We should have 1-1.5 minutes per question
If you read slowly, you don’t have to make a passage map, but be sure that you can identify the following:
- Main point
- Passage Structure (1. What’s it talking about, how is it presenting information, are things being compared, what’s the position)
How should I approach an RC Main Point Question?
- You shouldn’t have to go back to the passage to find the answer
- You should work from wrong to right (eliminate the wrong answers and to the best answer from the remaining)
What do I want to do when I see an RC Detail question?
Know that you’ll most likely have to go back to the passaage to gather the specific detail
What do I want to remember when addressing a RC Specific purpose question?
You’ll need to go to the passage to find the answer. Find the clause in question, read above and below to identify why the author represented it.
What do I want to remember when addressing an RC Inference question?
To infer something from the passage we need to be able to conclude something based upon what’s known in the passage.
- Don’t attempt to work from wrong to right with these questions.
- Find the best match
What do I want to remember when addressing a describe the role CR question like this?
- Identify the conclusion
- Characterize how each of the boldface statements relate to that conclusion
What do I want to remember when addressing a CR Find the Assumption question like this?
- Remember to identify the conclusion / point that the statement is making
- Once you have this you can back out which answer would impact that conclusion
