Writing systems: Pictogaphic
Representing meaning through visual representation e.g. Heiroglyphics
Writing systems: Ideographic
A symbol representing a words meaning but not its pronunciation e.g. Kanji
Three advantages of ideograms
1) Different languages can use same script
2) sy to read if ideogram resembles the picture it represents
3) No problems with spelling
Disadvantages of using ideograms are
1) Lavborious to read
2) Even best scholars can only remember a couple of thousand characters, compared to 20,000 word vocab of average Brit
Advantages of phonetics (2)
Increases a persons vocab
easier to write
Disadvantage of phonetic spelling
Irregular spelling (e.g. yacht) have to be learnt and effects both reading and spelling
