what are metals usually found as
Metals are normally found in ores, where it is reacted with other elements such as oxygen
one method of extracting metal from metal ores
One method of extracting metals from metal ores, is reacting them with carbon
When reacting them with carbon, the metal is displaced by carbon
HOWEVER, for metals more reactive than carbon, you must use electrolysis
properties of aluminium and uses
Properties of aluminium: low-density and corrosion-resistant
Uses of aluminium: cooking foil, aircraft and trains, power cables and saucepans
properties of copper and uses
Properties of copper: good conductor, soft, ductile (ductile means it can be drawn into wires) and does not react with water
Uses of copper: electrical wires and plumbing
properties of iron
Iron: pure iron is too soft, iron from the blast furnace is too brittle to use, so iron is converted into steel
properties of low carbon steel, how much carbon percentage, what its used in
Low carbon steel - 0.25% carbon - easily shaped - car body panels
properties of high carbon steel, how much carbon percentage, what its used in
High carbon steel - 25% carbon - hard - used in cutting tools
properties of stainless steel, what its mixed with to make the alloy, what its used in
Stainless steel - has chromium and nickel - resistant to corrosion - used in sinks, cutlery
what is an alloy
An alloy is a mixture of a metal with one or more different elements
Common alloys are a mixture of metals or a mixture of metals with carbon
An alloy is much harder than a pure metal
what are the properties of alloys compared to a pure metal
In a pure metal all of the atoms are the same size, so it has a very regular structure, so the layers slide over each other very easily making it soft
However, in an alloy, the particles are different sizes, leading to an irregular structure, so the layers cannot slide over each other easily making it hard
what is a pure metal
a metal substance consisting of only 1 metal element
what do you call a reaction where an acid reacts with an alkali
When an acid and alkali react, this is a neutralisation reaction
what are the 3 indicators and properties
These are all INDICATORS
Litmus paper: blue = alkaline red = acidic
Litmus solution: blue = alkaline red = acidic
Phenolphthalein: pink = alkaline colourless= acidic
Methyl Orange: yellow = alkaline red=acidic
what do the colours stand for on the PH scale
On the pH scale, <7 is acidic, >7 is alkaline and 7= neutral
On the pH scale, red, orange, yellow is acidic, green is neutral and blue/purple is alkaline
