Reactivity series Flashcards
Displacement Reaction:
A chemical reaction in which a more reactive metal displaces a less
reactive metal from its compound.
Oxidation
A process in which an element loses electrons during a reaction
Reduction
A chemical reaction involving the gain of electrons or the decrease in oxidation state
by a molecule, atom, or ion.
Oxidizing Agent
A substance that tends to bring about oxidation by being reduced and gaining
electrons.
Reducing Agent
A substance that tends to bring about reduction by losing electrons and being
oxidized.
Noble Metals
Metals like gold, silver, and platinum, which are found towards the bottom of the
reactivity series due to their low reactivity.
Alkali Metals
: Highly reactive metals at the top of the reactivity series, known for reacting
vigorously with water.
Alkaline Earth Metals
Elements in Group 2 of the periodic table, less reactive than alkali metals
but still high in the reactivity series
Hydrogen
Included in the reactivity series for comparison, indicating whether a metal can
displace hydrogen from acids.
Corrosion
The deterioration of a metal as a result of chemical reactions between it and the
surrounding environment
