RATE OF REACTION Flashcards
Rate of Reaction
The speed at which reactants are converted into products in a chemical
reaction.
Catalyst
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being consumed or
permanently changed.
Activation Energy
The minimum amount of energy required to start a chemical reaction.
Concentration
The amount of a substance per defined space; higher concentrations often
increase the rate of reaction
Temperature
A measure of heat; increasing temperature generally increases the rate of
reaction by providing more energy to the reactants.
Pressure
The force exerted by the substance per unit area; in reactions involving gases,
increasing pressure often increases the rate of reaction.
Surface Area
The measure of how much-exposed area a solid object has; increasing surface
area (by dividing a solid into smaller pieces) increases the rate of reaction.
Reaction Mechanism
The step-by-step sequence of elementary reactions by which overall
chemical change occurs
Collision Theory
A theory that states that chemical reactions occur when particles collide with
sufficient energy and correct orientation.
Inhibitor
A substance that decreases the rate of, or prevents, a chemical reaction.
